Reading is the county town of Berkshire, with a population of 163,100. It lies 24 miles south of Oxford and 40 miles west of London.

Sites of interest include the ruins of Reading Abbey, which was founded in 1121. St Laurence's Church is Grade I listed and dates from the Norman period, although it has been rebuilt on a number of occasions. Reading Minster was founded in the seventh-century and is Grade I listed. Reading Town Hall was constructed during the eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries; it houses Reading Museum. Other museums in Reading include the Museum of English Rural Life, the Cole Museum of Zoology and the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology.

Other sites of interest include Prospect Park, which is the largest public park in the town. Forbury Gardens is a park situated on the site of the outer court of Reading Abbey. The Blade is a skyscraper and is the tallest building in Reading. Cultural attractions include The Hexagon, which is an arts and theatre venue in the town. The Oracle is a large indoor shopping centre in Reading, and has 90 shops as well as a cinema, cafes, bars and restaurants.

A number of events take place in Reading, including Reading Festival, which is the world's oldest popular music festival still in existence and was founded in 1971. Reading Beer Festival is one of the largest beer festivals in the United Kingdom.

There are facilities for sports including basketball, football, rugby, rowing and hockey. Reading F.C. play their home games at the Madejski Stadium, which has a capacity of 24,161.

Reading has several primary and secondary schools. Reading School was established in 1125 and is one of the oldest schools in England. Reading College provides further education courses. The University of Reading gained university status in 1926 and has an enrolment of 15,840 students.

Reading railway station offers services to destinations including Bath, Basingstoke, Bristol, Oxford, London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bournemouth. There are bus services in operation in the town.
